Checklist to prepare for a hurricane

Hurricane season officially begins in June and continues through November. Are you prepared for a potential storm? Check all of these items off your list and know where to go in the event of a medical emergency. St. Joseph Health has multiple emergency facilities located throughout the Brazos Valley for convenient access to care.

What should be in an emergency supplies kit?

  1. Water
  2. Non-perishable Food, such as canned goods, energy bars, dried fruits, and nuts
  3. Manual can opener
  4. First aid kit
  5. Medications
  6. Flashlight and batteries
  7. Whistle
  8. Multi-tool or Swiss army knife
  9. Personal hygiene items
  10. Copies of important documents
  11. Blankets or sleeping bags
  12. Clothing
  13. Emergency cash
  14. Maps
  15. Personal Items, such as a cell phone with chargers, extra batteries, and any other personal items specific to your needs

How to build a family communication plan during a hurricane

  1. Identify emergency contacts: Compile a list of emergency contacts including local authorities, relatives, neighbors, and out-of-town contacts.
  2. Establish communication channels: Determine primary and backup communication methods such as text messages, phone calls, social media, or email.
  3. Create a communication tree: Assign roles and responsibilities to family members for reaching out to designated contacts and updating each other on their status.
  4. Set meeting points: Plan meeting locations both inside and outside the home in case of evacuation or separation.
  5. Share important information: Ensure everyone knows key information like evacuation routes, shelter locations, and emergency protocols.
  6. Practice regularly: Conduct drills to practice the communication plan and ensure everyone is familiar with the process.
  7. Stay informed: Monitor weather updates and local news for the latest information on the hurricane's path and potential impacts.
